In21st of January, 2019, NITE（National Institute of Technology and Evaluation），Japan, and FIRDI (Food Industry Research and Development Institute ) signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understand (MOU) and Agreement to enhance the cooperation with respect to bioresource collections, identifications, distributions, usage of bioresources, as well we biosecurity issues in both technical and information sharing. Deputy Director General of FIRDI, Prof. Tony, J, Fang and Director of BCRC (Bioresource Collection and Research Centre), Dr. Gwo-Fang Yuan represented FIRDI in the signing ceremony in Tokyo, Japan. This bilateral MOU and Agreement will not only prompt the services but also enhance the reputation as well as visibilities for both parties
Under the Agreement, promotional activities as well as exchange of skills and information, will be provided (but mot limited to) as follows:
Services provided by a biological resource center which is within the competence of each Party;
Procedures, precautionary statements and other relevant information on transboundary microbial transfer;
Translation of material distribution manuals or other relevant documents;
The list of strains provided by the Party.
Microbial identification using Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS);
Bioresources deposition services provided by BCRC for NBRC customers.
A. Public Deposition of Bioresources
Transboundary transfer of the bacteria may involve inspection at the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ). BCRC needs to look into the IMPORT requirements after getting those deposit documents.
The following information shall be provided if possible:
Declaration or Statement: the strain is not harmful to plants or animals. (With Letterhead of University, signed)
Journals about this genus (related species), the environment, characteristic, taxonomy, biosafety description, description of interaction between fungi and plants (such as promoting plant growth, symbiosis, plant damage, etc.)….
Therefore, it is very important that you send the material AFTER BCRC gives you a green light.
The public deposition process:
Email the deposit application, strain data table, strain sequence and other documents. Please send the documents to mailto:email@example.com
Conduct a deposit review (import permit)
After approval of the review, BCRC will inform the customer to send the strains & application form. (NOTE: It REALLY takes time to get the import requirements from the BAPHIQ.)
*Be sure to keep the strains. If there is any problem during the process, you will be contacted again.
The deposit certificate and the strain confirmation tube will be issued.
The process flowchart for public deposit can be summarized as follow:
B. Patent Deposit
Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), based on the Patent Act, has appointed the Food Industry Research and Development Institute (FIRDI) as the deposit institute for applications related to invention patents of microorganisms since 21st of April, 1994.
