FIRDI-NITE MOU and Agreement Signing Ceremony in Tokyo, Japan.

In 21st of January, 2019, NITE(National Institute of Technology and Evaluation),Japan, and FIRDI (Food Industry Research and Development Institute ) signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understand (MOU) and Agreement to enhance the cooperation with respect to bioresource collections, identifications, distributions, usage of bioresources, as well we biosecurity issues in both technical and information sharing. Deputy Director General of FIRDI, Prof. Tony, J, Fang and Director of BCRC (Bioresource Collection and Research Centre), Dr. Gwo-Fang Yuan represented FIRDI in the signing ceremony in Tokyo, Japan. This bilateral MOU and Agreement will not only prompt the services but also enhance the reputation as well as visibilities for both parties

Under the Agreement, promotional activities as well as exchange of skills and information, will be provided (but mot limited to) as follows:

  1. Services provided by a biological resource center which is within the competence of each Party;
  2. Procedures, precautionary statements and other relevant information on transboundary microbial transfer;
  3. Translation of material distribution manuals or other relevant documents;
  4. The list of strains provided by the Party.
  5. Microbial identification using Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS);
  6. Bio-security and bio-safety assessment

Services of NBRC

NBRC: Deposit

Deposit of biological materials

NBRC accepts deposit of biological materials that are newly named or having potential usefulness for academic and industrial uses. We assign NBRC number to the deposited biological materials and will make them available to the public.

Deposit procedures are available at:

https://www.nite.go.jp/en/nbrc/cultures/deposit/general_deposit.html#general

For acceptable biological materials, please refer to the following webpage

https://www.nite.go.jp/en/nbrc/cultures/deposit/index.html

Patent Deposit

NITE Patent Microorganisms Depositary (NPMD) and International Patent Organism Depositary (IPOD) are designated as International Depositary Authorities (IDA) under the Budapest Treaty. NPMD and IPOD accept, preserve and furnish patent biological materials.

Outline of NPMD and IPOD is available at:

NBRC: Distribution services

Ordering strains

For ordering strains, please refer to the following webpage.

https://www.nite.go.jp/en/nbrc/cultures/nbrc/order/gene.html

1.Strain search

All the strains preserved at NBRC can be found in the NBRC Culture Catalogue.

https://www.nite.go.jp/en/nbrc/cultures/nbrc/online/index.html

 The online catalogue is a database search system for microbial strains distributed by the NBRC. You can perform a search by entering the strain number, scientific name, source locality and keywords. Our database also provides sequence data, culturing condition, and original source.

 For searching strains in the database, please refer to the following webpage.

https://www.nite.go.jp/en/nbrc/cultures/nbrc/online/db_help.html

Please make sure to obtain appropriate permit for strains which are under regulation(s) for distribution. All information such as regulation, biosafety level, culturing condition of the strain are described at NBRC online catalog.

If your government agency requires a document for importing, please send us the form along with the order sheet. Please refer to the following webpage for the detailed conditions

https://www.nite.go.jp/en/nbrc/cultures/nbrc/order/gene.html

2. Order Sheet

For placing an order, please download the following forms and fill-in:

Order sheet (Microorganism)

Agreement of Biological Resource Transfer and Treatment Forms are available at:

SERVICE: Deposition services of BCRC

Deposition services of BCRC

Bioresources deposition services provided by BCRC for NBRC customers.

A. Public Deposition of Bioresources

Transboundary transfer of the bacteria may involve inspection at the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ). BCRC needs to look into the IMPORT requirements after getting those deposit documents.

The following information shall be provided if possible:

  1. Declaration or Statement: the strain is not harmful to plants or animals. (With Letterhead of University, signed)
  2. Journals about this genus (related species), the environment, characteristic, taxonomy, biosafety description, description of interaction between fungi and plants (such as promoting plant growth, symbiosis, plant damage, etc.)….

Therefore, it is very important that you send the material AFTER BCRC gives you a green light.

The public deposition process:

  1. Email the deposit application, strain data table, strain sequence and other documents. Please send the documents to mailto:hyc97@firdi.org.tw
  2. Conduct a deposit review (import permit)
  3. After approval of the review, BCRC will inform the customer to send the strains & application form. (NOTE: It REALLY takes time to get the import requirements from the BAPHIQ.)
  4. Preservation process

*Be sure to keep the strains. If there is any problem during the process, you will be contacted again.

  1. The deposit certificate and the strain confirmation tube will be issued.

The process flowchart for public deposit can be summarized as follow:

B. Patent Deposit

Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), based on the Patent Act, has appointed the Food Industry Research and Development Institute (FIRDI) as the deposit institute for applications related to invention patents of microorganisms since 21st of April, 1994.

        “Operational Directions Governing the Mutual Cooperation between Taiwan Intellectual Property Office and Japan Patent Office in the Field of Deposit of Biological Materials for the Purposes of Patent Procedure” is available at https://patent.bcrc.firdi.org.tw/cooperation/tw-jp-cooperation/

Should you need any further information, please feel free to contact the NBRC-BCRC personnel Dr. Patricia Cheng. (hyc97@firdi.org.tw)
